Understanding this data

These tables and charts cover acute and maternity services. We have looked to present the data to make organisations' data and time series as comparable as possible. However, there will be some local differences or changes in classifications that we cannot account for centrally, so where the time series charts show abrupt changes in numbers, these should be treated with caution.

To provide time series of data back to 2019 we have adjusted for organisations mergers. However, there may be some local or complex service reconfigurations that we have been unable to adjust for centrally.

Totals

The percentage change between the summed total of all presented staff groups, compared to the equivalent total for the selected baseline period.

Metric descriptions

HCHS doctors: Includes GMC registered doctors working in different settings and at different levels of career progression, from resident doctors to Consultants.
Nurses & health visitors: Includes NMC registered nurses and health visitors working in different settings and spanning multiple job roles and levels of career progression.
Midwives: Includes NMC registered midwives working in different settings and spanning multiple job roles and levels of career progression.
Scientific, therapeutic & technical staff: Includes allied health professionals, healthcare scientists and other qualified scientific, therapeutic and technical staff working in different settings and spanning multiple job roles.
Support to clinical staff: Includes staff on an AfC band who are in direct support of qualified clinical staff. Roles should have some patient contact and could include nursing assistants, healthcare assistants, ward receptionists and catering staff.
NHS infrastructure support: Includes staff on an AfC band who are in non clinical support roles. Staff would not normally have significant patient contact and will include management and central functions (HR, finance) roles and hotel, property and estates staff.
